Embassy of Turkmenistan in Islamabad had a videoconference meeting with members of Rotary Club Islamabad Metropolitan on 1st February 2021.

During the meeting H.E. Mr. Atadjan Movlamov, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan briefed participants on the foreign policy of Turkmenistan and its economic policy. He said current year will be held in Turkmenistan under the slogan “Year 2021 - Turkmenistan homeland of peace and trust”. It is consistent with the UN Resolution designating 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.

Talking about the policy of Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan, it was stressed that in twenty-five years passed since the General Assembly adopted the first Resolution on the Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan which was adopted on December 12, 1995, Turkmenistan demonstrated itself as a reliable ally and effective partner of the UN in protection and support of political stability in the region, development of good neighbourliness, friendship and cooperation.

As an indication of importance of Turkmenistan’s policy of Neutrality and a clear example of the global significance of Neutrality in the world politics we consider the number of decisions of UNGA connected to Turkmenistan’s Neutrality.

  • The opening of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Turkmen capital Ashgabat in 2007.
  • The second Resolution on Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan adopted by United Nations General Assembly on June 3, 2015.
  • December 12 proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the International Day of Neutrality, by initiative of Turkmenistan, on February 2, 2017.
  • September 12, 2019, UNGA adopted a resolution declaring the year 2021 as International Year of Peace and Trust. It underlined that the International Year constitutes a means of mobilizing international efforts to promote peace and trust among nations on the basis of political dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation in order to build sustainable peace, solidarity and harmony.

Neutrality has also allowed Turkmenistan to come up with constructive proposals to promote energy, transport and environmental safety from the United Nations high rostrum.

Neutral Turkmenistan has established a constructive relationship of cooperation with its neighbors and is contributing to building a lasting peace through economic and humanitarian assistance, engaging Afghanistan in regional projects and participating in international initiatives to rebuild Afghanistan, in particular through programs under the RECCA (Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan), and the construction of infrastructure projects like Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Malik Ashraf Hameed, President of Rotary Club of Islamabad Metropolitan and former ambassadors, appraised the role of Turkmenistan’s Neutrality in strengthening peace in the region and stressed the positive influence of implementing multinational infrastructure projects beginning from Turkmenistan for Pakistan’s economy.
